In 2019, as part of the $330 million expansion program, refurbishment works to the existing casino and upgrades to the gaming floors were undertaken in preparation for the new extension and hotel.
The design approach had to consider the following:
Relevance to the location;
Achieve a timeless appearance;
Appeal to a broad demographic;
Provide a clear hierarchy that could extend complexity to different areas, creating a seamless and coherent experience; and
Represent the SkyCity brand and core elements.
For the gaming and casino refurbishments, the team drew inspiration from the building itself. Being sympathetic to the historic architecture and complimenting its grandiosity. Initial concepts referenced luxury brands such as Versace, Gucci, and Chanel, all institutional in their reputation and appearance.
Geometric patterns emulated the notions of wealth and aspiration and anchored the design through the custom carpet. Strength in its simple lines and repetition also added complexity on closer inspection. This pattern referenced the building’s already established fluted columns, intricate ceiling details, and architraves.
Gold, blue and red were the chosen colours, synonymous with good luck within Asian culture and luxury around the world.
Further embellishment was added, including gradients, overlays and shimmer intertwined with local Australian natives, appealing to a local and international clientele and creating a gasping experience for all to enjoy.
